CUBOIDHOOD… Interlocking & Interaction spaces for living

CUBOIDHOOD… Interlocking & Interaction spaces for living

Nashik city holds a significant historical, traditional and cultural context and is enriched with architecture from those glorious times. If we happen to look at residential typology, the wadas, here we can identify its characteristic elements are the courtyards, verandahs and especially the overlooking horizontal balconies in multi-storeyed layers. These spaces being very intricate and cozy semi open areas that allow for communication with the outside.

The design approach here is a response to this rich context. Our Site is located in the dense neighbourhood and has two roads abuting its west and the south side.

Idea of the project was to explore this two road corner & also create similar protective layer and buffer on south and west side, which was formed by introducing a similar traditionally explored Verandah space. So in a vertical setting these verandahs are 6 feet wide cantilever Balconies that span across the full length of building mass giving it a horizontal appeal.

The the two side traditional open verandah here is interpreted in modern way and  are arranged to interlock, that makes it look like as if the upper floor mass sits on the lower floor mass. This interlocking of floor creates a fragmented corner that adds emphasis to the road junction and the sciography of the sun and trees adds to the drama in a melodious way.

Fragmentation of the floors has helped make building scales become humane and the vertical mass that would have otherwise overpowered, now looks visually reduced. The colour and detailing of the building is kept subtle and this gives apartment a Simplified character. The apartment rests here with its dramatic qualities of interlocking forms at corner which becomes the main focus point of building.

If we look at the space the verandahs act as good insulation from harsh sun in the summers, as well as allows for a great semi open space to catch gentle warmth in winters. They create a beautiful picture frame from the living room as the visuals open out to pandavlene mountains. Hence these verandhas have become the characteristic element of the apartment and a fun evening space that allows for a  pause point to sit and relax
